- Is meal preparation the main function of the kitchen? Gourmet cooks and gardeners want different level of functionality than do homeowners who eat out often or want to be in and out of the kitchen quickly.
- How does the family use the kitchen? How will their needs change your requirements over the next ten years? (If you cannot imagine the answer to this question, ask friends who are few years ahead of you in terms of family life)
- Do you want easy access to the backyard, dining room, and garage?
- Is there a special view you want to preserve or establish?
- Do you want family and friends to be involved and be close to the action in the kitchen?
- What appliances and amenities must be included? Warming drawers, refrigeration zones, wine coolers, ultra-quite dishwashers that sense how dirty the dishes are, or cook tops with interchangeable cooking modules.
- What are your storage needs? If you own a lot of kitchen items, have a relatively small kitchen, or want personally tailored storage space, take a detailed inventory of your processions.
- Is the kitchen also a work area or home office? Do you need a location for computerized home management or intercom system?
